The Fijian Government is preparing to contest a United States businessman who trademarked the word “Bula”. Fiji’s Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said in a statement preparations were underway to lodge necessary documentation with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Florida bar owner Ross Kashtan trademarked the commonly-used traditional Fijian greeting. The trademarking can be used to prevent other businesses from using the word “Bula” in bars and cafes selling kava drinks and others.

Sayed-Khaiyum also confirmed the matter will be raised with the World Intellectual Property Organisation.
