To ensure sustainability remains a priority for the IP legal profession, the Chartered Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys (CITMA) is set to launch a net zero pledge for firms and organizations operating within the IP legal sector to sign.
The ultimate goal is for the IP profession to be net zero.
Pledging to be net zero
Signing the pledge is an important step for firms and organizations and a direct way to get involved in the collective effort. It sets out simple steps that are designed to be achievable while also challenging the sector to do more towards becoming net zero.
Some of the actions include:
- Appointing a green champion
- Measuring and reducing greenhouse gas emissions
- Setting net zero targets
- And promoting sustainable practices.
If signed, the firm or organization’s name will be added to CITMA’s pledge signatories page, and they will be provided with a badge to display their commitment to sustainability.
Sharing knowledge
Alongside the pledge, a knowledge hub will share best practices, provide resources, and support the IP profession with its sustainability goals.
CITMA has worked with sustainability experts from Climate Action for Associations (CAFA) to create the hub and will continue to update it regularly. With a wide range of informative articles, from jargon busters to quick wins, members can find guidance for every stage of their sustainability journeys.
Climate change and its present and future impact is widely reported as one of the most pressing challenges of our time. The UK is legally bound to cut greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050, and it’s evident that this ambitious target will only be met through collaborative action.
CITMA itself has made a commitment to become net zero and has made progress to demonstrate this. Having recently achieved carbon-neutral status for 2023 and with a clear action plan set out for 2024, CITMA is on track to achieve this for yet another year.
Kelly Saliger, CITMA President, said: “Every organization, regardless of size, should be taking its responsibility to be sustainable seriously. We’re proud to unveil this new initiative, which we’ve been working towards for some time. There’s no denying the enormity of the net zero challenge, but we know that by working together and taking decisive action, we can make a real difference.
“With our online hub and pledge, we aim to empower every member to embrace net zero.
“Whether you’re well on your way or just starting out in your journey, signing the pledge allows you to take instant action and stand united in your dedication to climate action.”
