As a proud member of the Editorial Board of The Trademark Lawyer, I could not decline the invitation of the Editor-in-Chief, Elizabeth Jordan, to join the Winter Intellectual Property Conference, organized by CTC Legal Events.
I was interested in many of the topic sessions that composed the two days, and the way it took place went far beyond my expectations.
First, the format of each session was good in many aspects; typically, panel sessions were set at no more than 40 minutes, which is a reasonable timeframe to maintain the audience’s full attention.
Second, each panel of speakers used this time to foster meaningful dialogue among themselves, and the use of slides was minimal, allowing more time to hear about the speakers’ experiences. This was much more interesting than a speaker who reads their slides, which can often raise less enthusiasm among the audience. Of course, they can vary their tone of voice and make the exposition more striking, but I much preferred that the speakers at the WIPC shared examples, facts, and experiences from their own professional activities. This was much more effective and encouraged me to take more notes, which I would have been less inclined to do if I knew the slides would be available to me after the conference.
The limited number of attendees was also a positive; there was much more opportunity to approach colleagues whom I didn’t know. A less crowded environment encourages people who do not know each other to meet.
Additionally, many in-house counsel at the WIPC were more amicable and readily available to meet with me and others. I appreciate their role is not easy during conferences; they tend to act as a kind of beehive, where all the bees (attorneys) want to go, and hopefully, establish a connection. Instead, I found them much easier to approach.
Now that I’m gathering my new LinkedIn contacts as a result of my post about the WIPC, I can honestly say that this conference has provided much more than I expected, even in comparison to the consolidated conferences. Smaller, but more effective and, in addition, innovative.
I hope that the WIPC keeps its venue in the UK or the EU for the next conference in 2026.
Thank you to all CTC Legal Events staff for the warm welcome and excellent organization. All the best for the future!
