The firm’s latest expansion highlights a long-term strategy focused on proximity to clients, access to regional innovation networks, and the delivery of specialized IP services beyond traditional business centers.
Granada, Spain, September 15, 2026 – ABG Intellectual Property, one of Europe’s leading intellectual property firms, has announced the opening of a new office in Granada, strengthening its presence across Spain and advancing a long-term growth strategy built around regional innovation ecosystems. The new office becomes the firm’s fifth location in the country, joining Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao, and Valencia.
The move reflects ABG IP’s commitment to supporting innovators where research, technology transfer, and industrial development are taking place, while providing clients with direct access to highly specialized intellectual property expertise.
“Over the past several years, we have developed a significant client base in Andalusia, ranging from large corporations and innovative SMEs to leading research institutions,” said Juan Arias, Managing Partner at ABG Intellectual Property. “This expansion reflects our belief that high-value innovation increasingly takes place beyond traditional business centers. By strengthening our presence in the region, we are positioning ourselves closer to the organizations that will shape the next generation of technological and scientific developments.”
Bringing European patent expertise closer to regional innovation
The Granada office will be led by Juan Manuel Soto, who joined ABG IP in 2021. Holding a PhD in Physics, he is qualified both as a Spanish Patent and Trademarks Agent and as a European Patent Attorney. He is among the small number of European Patent Attorneys practicing in Andalusia and the only one based in the province of Granada, according to the European Patent Office’s register of representatives.
Soto believes intellectual property has a critical role to play in helping regional innovation reach commercial markets.
“Many of the advances developed in Andalusia have the potential to generate substantial economic and social value but do not always make the transition from research to commercial application,” he said. “Effective intellectual property strategies can help bridge that gap, supporting investment, business creation, employment, and long-term industrial development.”
A decentralized growth model
The new office is the latest step in a decentralized expansion strategy that ABG IP has pursued over the last decade. Rather than concentrating resources in a single location, the firm has progressively built specialized teams in key innovation centers across Spain, enabling closer collaboration with clients while attracting talent with strong regional ties and deep technical expertise.
This approach has been particularly evident in Barcelona, where the office opened in 2007 and will comprise nine IP professionals from October 2026. ABG IP also established its Valencia office in 2024, while its Bilbao office has served clients in northern Spain since 2015.
The opening in Granada further strengthens the firm’s ability to support companies, research institutions, universities, and investors seeking to protect and maximize the value of their intellectual assets across a broad range of technologies and scientific disciplines.
