Francine is the founder of the Singapore law firm Francine Tan Law Corporation. She has practised in IP law since 1993. She is a graduate of the Law Faculty, National University of Singapore and is admitted to the Supreme Court of Singapore as an Advocate & Solicitor, and to the Roll of Solicitors of England and Wales.
Francine has managed the trademark portfolios of many clients over the years and been consistently recognised by many reputable global publications in the field of IP as one of the leading trademark attorneys and one of the top 250 women in IP.
She established her IP law practice in 2010 and in 2017, the firm achieved the honour of receiving the ASIA IP award for Trademark Law Firm of 2017 (Singapore) and in 2020, the firm was accorded the honour of winning the IAM/WTR Global IP award for Singapore trademark firm of the year, at the awards ceremony which took place in London. Locally, the firm has been recognised by the Straits Times/Statista as one of the top IP law firms in Singapore (2021-2023).
The firm advises on trademark searching and clearance, brand and design protection, as well as patents. It also provides advice on licence and franchise agreements, as well as other commercial agreements and matters.
The firm also handles IP dispute work and the negotiation of settlement agreements. Francine has litigated in many opposition, invalidation and revocation proceedings before IPOS. Her work includes interactions with the IP Rights Branch of the Singapore Police to deal with counterfeit products. She has also been active in trademark enforcement actions in Singapore, as well as in copyright and design infringement matters.
The firm’s clients include SMEs, MNCs and individuals, both locally and also primarily from the U.S., the EU, UK, Japan, Taiwan, and Australia. They include luxury fashion and jewellery brands, pharmaceutical companies, and those from the beauty and cosmetics, FMCG, software, electronics, fintech, hospitality, healthcare, insurance, sports and lifestyle products and services industries.
Francine’s area of specialisation includes domain name disputes and issues relating to cybersquatting. She has conducted workshops and given talks at industry seminars on the Uniform Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP). She has since 2002 served as a WIPO Panelist for domain name disputes. She also serves as a Panelist for the National Arbitration Forum (NAF) and the Asian Domain Name Dispute Resolution Centre (ADNDRC).
Francine serves on the Board of Directors of the International Trademark Association (INTA) (2021-2023).
The firm was selected in 2021 to be one of the partner firms of Amazon’s IP Accelerator program and assists online sellers on Amazon’s platform with securing trademark protection in Singapore.
