Washington, D.C. – September 20, 2023 – Dykema, a leading national law firm, today announced the addition of Karen R. Poppel as a Senior Counsel in its Intellectual Property Department resident in the firm’s Washington, D.C., office. Poppel joins Dykema after practicing at RatnerPrestia.
Poppel has extensive experience handling patent, trademark, trade secret, and commercial litigation. For more than 10 years, she has utilized her chemistry background to concentrate her practice in the chemical, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical sectors, including representing patent holders in Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) litigation. Poppel’s experience includes representing domestic and international clients in federal courts and before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board.
Poppel is a co-author of the American Bar Association publication “ANDA Litigation: Strategies and Tactics for Pharmaceutical Patent Litigators,” Chapter 3, Notice and Pre-Filing Considerations (3d. 2020).

Poppel earned a J.D., with honors, from the George Washington University Law School, as well as an M.S. in Chemistry from Emory University and a B.S. in Chemistry from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. While at law school, she served as a judicial extern to the Honorable John M. Facciola in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia.
