New York, New York—May 7, 2025—The International Trademark Association (INTA) announced today the appointment of David Gooder as a senior advisor. Gooder most recently served as Commissioner for Trademarks at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) from March 2020 to February 2025, the expiration of his five-year term.

As Commissioner, Gooder served as the principal agency official for trademarks, both domestically and internationally. He was the Chief Operating Officer of the Trademark Office and led its roughly 1,300 trademark professionals through five very challenging years.

Prior to taking on the job as Commissioner, Gooder worked for 25+ years on intellectual property (IP) and brand protection challenges facing global brands, primarily in the distilled spirits and wine industries, where he was the founding Managing Director and Chief Trademark Counsel at Jack Daniel’s Properties.

Within INTA, Gooder previously served two terms on the Board of Directors, was an Officer, and was Chair of the INTA Foundation for more than a decade. He was also Chair of the Industry Advisory Council, now known as the In-House Practitioners Committee.

In this new role as senior advisor, Gooder will support various external relations projects, including helping INTA’s focus on enhancing the critical role of IP offices in the protection of brands.

“Dave is a dynamic and innovative leader in the IP industry. He has a deep understanding of how the global IP landscape is evolving, as well as the challenges facing IP offices and their users today. We have always appreciated the passion, time, and technical expertise that he has brought to the IP community over the years,” said INTA CEO Etienne Sanz de Acedo. “I am personally very much looking forward to working with Dave in this new capacity. I have no doubt that our Association and our members around the world are going to benefit greatly from his ongoing contributions to INTA.”

“I am deeply honored to take on this role with INTA as I believe that the closer brand owners and IP offices can work, the better it will be for the trademark ecosystem, including consumers,” said Gooder. “For 37 years, I have been a passionate trademark lawyer, and throughout that journey, INTA and the thousands of practitioners who take part have collectively been the single most consistent and positive force. I am so very happy to now be able to give back in this unique way.”
