The International Trademark Association (INTA) will host its 2023 New York Conference, The Business of Data: Innovation, Regulation, Security, and Ethics on March 22 and 23 in New York City.

“The popular saying ‘Data is King’ has never been truer!” said INTA CEO Etienne Sanz de Acedo. “Data has found its way into almost every aspect of our lives. It is also now interacting with intellectual property (IP) in increasingly complex ways, presenting us—as brand professionals—with opportunities but also risks that we must traverse. It has become urgent for the IP community to fully engage this topic.”

The world today is data driven. There is a multi-jurisdictional regulatory environment to navigate, emerging technology to understand, and privacy issues to be explored. Today’s brand professional is no longer simply a trademark specialist but a generalist with subject matter expertise across a number of topics and issues. This includes data. The Conference is designed to bring anyone interested into this next phase in the growth and development of the profession.

The event brings together experts and thought leaders in the field. Speakers, including from major brands such as Citigroup, Mastercard, L’Oréal, Uber, and WeWork, will lead participants through the many-layered and multi-disciplined nature of data.

“The program includes sessions with a strong focus on the regulatory landscape governing data/consumer protection in the European Union, in the United States, and globally, which brand professionals today simply must understand to effectively navigate this evolving environment,” said Conference Co-Chair Cathy Lueders (Mastercard, USA).

“On the other hand, we also have sessions designed to address the big questions we face right now. For example, what are the legal rights that attach to different data sets? And who owns those rights?” noted Phillip V. Marano (Greenberg Traurig, LLP, USA). “In another session, we’ll look at the challenges raised by exercising and enforcing individuals’ rights when data is collected through immersive technologies, including virtual reality games and the metaverse.”

The conference program is complimented by several opportunities for Business Development and networking, including an early morning walk/run on Wednesday and Thursday morning through Central Park (from which all funds collected will be donated the park), ten-pin bowling, a cocktail mixology class, and a pre-Annual Meeting reception (as one of a series of receptions taking place globally ahead of the 2023 Annual Meeting Live+).
