Perhaps unsurprisingly, the past few weeks have seen a reduction in job appointments and other such announcements. There have, however, been a few important developments here and there.

For starters, marking an exciting and significant moment, Johansson & Langlois, one of the oldest and most prestigious law firms in Chile, is currently celebrating its 75th Anniversary.

Founded on 7 May 1945 by Pedro Johansson and Pablo Langlois, Johansson & Langlois focused strongly on industrial and intellectual property from the outset, becoming one of the first firms in Chile to specialize in IP. Now recognized globally, the firm has established its reputation in both contentious and non-contentious matters in trademarks, patents, copyrights, and new technologies.

In other news, European IP firm Carpmaels & Ransford recently announced the promotion of Jennifer Antcliff to partner in their Dispute Resolution team. Jenny, who joined the firm’s Dispute Resolution team in 2016, previously worked in-house at Actavis/Allergan, where she handled the high-profile pregabalin and tadalafil litigations. Jenny has represented clients up to the UK Supreme Court and the CJEU on matters such as blockbuster small molecule drugs, therapeutic antibodies, enzyme replacement therapies, nanotechnology, and orphan products. Jenny’s promotion brings the total number of partners in the Dispute Resolution team to five.

Hugh Goodfellow, Managing Partner at Carpmaels & Ransford, said:

“Jenny is an outstanding litigator and all the Partners very much look forward to the future with Jenny in the team. Her promotion will further strengthen our integrated dispute resolution capability and the holistic, strategic service we provide for our clients.”

Finally, in a noted move from big law to a cloud-based firm, Julia Anne Matheson has joined Potomac Law Group in Washington D.C. as a Partner in the Trademark, IP, and Litigation Practices. She adds to an established practice at the innovative firm, which now has four trademark partners, two of counsel, and experienced trademark paralegals, docketing, and support staff.

Julia was formerly Head of the U.S. Trademark Group at Hogan Lovells. Prior to that, she was a Partner with Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner, LLP, for over 20 years.

Julia has worked with a wide range of high-profile brands, including Starbucks, American National Red Cross, Merck, and ASOS. She was Google’s first trademark attorney and helped the company secure protection for the “GOOGLE” house mark and its original logo around the world.

Potomac Law Group uses a cloud-based business model that seeks to eliminate many of the overheads associated with traditional large law firms, such as expensive office space and training junior attorneys, allowing it to lower its rates – something that could be key for businesses looking to rebuild after the COVID-19 pandemic. It has lawyers in 18 U.S. states and is one of the fastest-growing firms in the U.S. The firm represents a wide range of clients (including nearly 10% of the Fortune 100) and continues to trailblaze when it comes to diversity; 80% of its management team are women, and 60% are minorities.

Julia said: “I’m very excited by this move. Potomac Law Group provides a fabulous platform, has a top-notch trademark team, and is exponentially different to anywhere I have worked before. The firm was created for the electronic age and that results in greater speed and efficiency for clients. There is also an impressive degree of collegiality, with lunch-and-learn sessions and happy hours.”
