International law firm Taylor Wessing expands with the launch of an exclusive relationship with a specialist trade mark and IP agency in China.
With international firms restricted from practicing Chinese law, a distinct legal entity has been established and permitted to provide a range of intellectual property related services by Chinese regulators.
Beijing Tailun IP Agency opened at the start of 2020 to pilot operations with select clients of Taylor Wessing before its official launch this week, and in consideration of lockdown measures from the Covid pandemic.
The agency is led by partner Thomas Pattloch, who was formerly the IP Officer of the EU Delegation to China, and launches with the appointment of five new lawyers.
Taylor Wessing has established a market leading international trade marks practice and, with the launch of a joined up offering through Beijing Tailun IP Agency, it is able to provide co-ordinated support internationally for clients in all aspects of contentious and non-contentious IP, now including registering, managing and defending their trade marks, domain names, and copyrights in mainland China.
The agency will act exclusively in cooperation with Taylor Wessing lawyers for strategic advice and assistance in trade mark and IP enforcement matters.
Partner and Head of Beijing Tailun IP Agency, Thomas Pattloch said: “China’s importance as a trade marks and copyright hub is increasing. Taylor Wessing’s team has a leading reputation throughout Europe in IP, and opening an independent agency dedicated to these services was the obvious next step. Clients will benefit greatly from the opportunities the new agency presents. Having a licensed IP office provides them with greater value and efficiency from international advisors that can support them across all aspects of IP needs.”
Germany Managing Partner Olaf Kranz commented: “The launch of the exclusive relationship with the agency is an integral part of our firm’s international strategy to provide clients with more opportunities to register trade marks and the copyright for their products. We’ve made strategic investments over the past twelve months, all focused around the value we can add for our clients in our core sectors of technology, life sciences and healthcare, and real estate, infrastructure and energy. I’m pleased to announce this as our latest investment to support their continued growth plans and international interests.”
UK Managing Partner Shane Gleghorn said: “We continue to invest significantly in our IP team, most recently in Liverpool, and the demand for their expertise continues to grow. The registration of trade marks, copyright and patent filings are essential for the growth of our clients and the agency in China enables us to support those growth plans.”
